Demonstrators on both sides of abortion issue crowd perimeter.
The leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion indicating the overturn of the 1973 decision Roe v. Wade has brought out demonstrators that are pro-life and pro-abortion. Justice Alito, who wrote the draft opinion, has canceled a public appearance at a judicial conference as journalists and media personalities have resorted to calling the justices names and even promoting violence.
In response to the fallout, crews showed up Wednesday night at the Supreme Court building with “tall, nonscaleable fencing” and put it up around the building.
The draft opinion is not final, and votes among the justices could change before a ruling is released in the coming months. The leak prompted Chief Justice John Roberts to order an investigation by the Marshal of the Court.
In the leaked opinion, Justice Alito wrote, “We cannot allow our decisions to be affected by any extraneous influences such as concern about the public’s reaction to our work. We do not pretend to know how our political system or society will respond to today’s decision overruling Roe and Casey.”
